I found your substack via Noah Smith's promotion of it.
Living in the US I have sensed the tension over Taiwan heating up and was interested in hearing a Taiwanese perspective. So thank you for starting this Substack!
I agree. Trump was disgusting on many levels. I was disappointed, but not surprised, to see "Mister Ma" elected and re-elected. Ko is a looming danger. I appreciate your logic. Thanks for this post.
I’m interested to hear why you would think that Thomas. Most people see Ko as losing momentum fast and that the Ko phenomenon was always something packaged by the DPP...which withdrew their support as soon as the Mayor got too big for his britches.
I sincerely hope you are correct. However, as long as "fear of upsetting XiJinPing" is the basis for all government decisions, I am not optimistic. Fear of change, Trump's strongest point, is a powerful motivator.
Hahaha, I can imagine the chaos! They are so stupid they actually accused Hsiao of “setting them up” by staying quiet ahead of the tweet. They were indignantly broadcasting their political ineptitude!
Thank you for writing this Angelica! I've been telling my friends that this would be the case that Biden would stand by well on Taiwan and do so for the right reasons whereas Trump and the Republican party would not. Also, am Chinese naturalized to American citizen so pretty satisfied with the lack of dog whistles from this new president if I say so myself.
This has been an extremely informative post!

Thank you Michael! I’m a huge Noah fan! LMK what else you might be curious about in Taiwan.

Would have loved to have been a fly on the wall in the KMT war room when Hsiao Bi-Kihm dropped that Tweet from the inauguration. Such a smooth move.
